Inside Mathematics: 5th Grade Math - Proportions & Ratios

This lesson is about ratios and proportions using candy boxes as well as a recipe for making candy as situations to be considered.

It addresses many of the Mathematical Reasoning standards for 5th grade. Students have trouble recognizing what a visual representation of a simplified fraction looks like. They’ve memorized how to simplify a fraction, but what does that mean in “real life”? Reading and understanding the problem is a challenge for some of the students, as well as articulating their thoughts in a way that is understandable to others. Additionally, students struggle with keeping their ratios consistent.
