With more and more women traveling to outer space, it’s time to make more female spacesuits! Students will explore space suit designs, learning about the functionality of each part and imagining what space suits might look like if redesigned for females.
Grades 3 – 5
In this activity, students will be introduced to the idea that more female space suits are needed because
more and more women are traveling to outer space! To help with this problem, students will divide into
groups, and each group will investigate one part of a space suit. After learning about its main job(s) and
how it helps astronauts in space, groups will collaborate to re-imagine what each part could look like if
it was redesigned for a female. Students will collaborate to add creative components that make it more
user-friendly and design elements that make it more stylish and fun to wear without losing the piece’s
overall purpose. Each group will then create a labeled sketch of the design, and all designs will be shared
during a Space Design and Fashion Show at the end of the session.
