Girls Get STEM: Lunar Impact

Who is the Wo(Man) in the Moon? Why might this face appear?

Students will investigate what happens on the Moon’s surface — including when meteorites strike — concluding the activity by creating his or her own version of the Wo(Man) in the Moon.

Grades K – 2

In this activity, students will be introduced to craters. The activity will begin as students observe
images of the Moon. The students will discuss if they have ever heard about the Wo(Man) in the
Moon, and they will consider why this “face” may appear. Next, students will participate in a smallgroup experiment to see how craters are formed. They will investigate what happens when the
Moon’s surface is hit with meteorites that vary in size and come from varying distances. Each student
will conclude by creating her or his own version of the Wo(Man) in the Moon.
