Anesthesiologists are doctors who specialize in anesthesiology.
They are involved with the patient’s care before, during, and after a surgery. They are responsible for administering general or local anesthesia or placing a patient under a state of sedation. General anesthesia places a patient into a state of controlled unconsciousness and is generally used for invasive surgeries while local anesthesia numbs only a specific area and can be used for procedures such as the removal of wisdom teeth. Sedation, on the other hand, places the patient into a relaxed, sleep-like state and is used for less invasive procedures. Anesthesiologists have degrees from medical schools and can be Doctors of Medicine or Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine.
