California Academy of Sciences: Science @ Home - Phases of the Moon Chart

Make your own moon chart to track its phases in the night sky—and learn about funny moon-related phrases like “waxing gibbous!”

Listen to instructions

Have you ever noticed that the Moon doesn’t always look the same? Some nights it is round
and bright while other times it is shaped more like a banana (crescent) or even too dark to see
at all. The Moon goes through all of its phases over 28 days,or almost one month. Create a
chart of the Moon phases and compare it to the Moon the next time it’s in view.
Please note: Younger children may need assistance with cutting or gluing.
