Desert tortoises are amazing animals, but we don’t know a lot about their life in the wild.
They are difficult to study because they spend about 95 percent of their life underground. For more than 20 years, the Arizona Game and Fish Department has been studying desert tortoises, trying to learn more about them.
Focus Wild Arizona Activity Sheets: From 2006-2013, each issue of the Department’s Arizona Wildlife Views magazine featured a new education article. These articles were intended for younger children and include some vocabulary and a fun activity. All of these articles are now available on our website.
