ACS: Science ABCs - 'H' is for Helicopter

Meet Heather Helicopter,
A very funny name.
But that’s what we call Heather-
Of helicopter fame.

Heather watches choppers fly—
Their blades spin ’round and ’round.
She likes to see them take off,
Then land back on the ground.

She wants to be a pilot,
Away up in the sky.
But ’til she gets her license,
She’ll make toy choppers fly!

What You’ll Need

  • 1 sheet of paper
  • metric ruler
  • blunt-tipped scissors
  • paper clip

How does Heather’s helicopter fly?

As the helicopter drops through the air, the air pushes against and around the paper propeller blades. That makes the helicopter spin. Placing a paper clip on the helicopter adds weight to make its flight more stable. Try flying your paper helicopter without a paper clip, and see what happens.
