Tucson Audubon Society: PATON CENTER & PATAGONIA REST STOP Field Trip

The famous Paton Center for Hummingbirds is known for its backyard birds and scenic location.

Fun finds at this location could include Violet-crowned Hummingbirds, Inca & Common Ground Doves, Black Vultures, Tyrant Flycatchers, Chats, Grosbeaks, Tanagers, and Orioles. And if we’re super lucky, we just might cross paths with Montezuma Quail (though unlikely). We’ll bird for about 2 hours near the Paton Center and then drive over to the Patagonia Rest Area, about a 7 minute drive southwest of town. We have the potential to find a nesting Rose-throated Becard, though no promises!

Those who want to carpool will meet at 6am at the Lamar Cobb Memorial (just south of I-10 on the Sonoita Hwy). Limited to 12 participants.

Trip Difficulty: Easy/Moderate. Less than 2 miles total, walking on a variety of surfaces. Plenty of time spent watching feeders and wandering around the Paton Center. Short walks (less than a mile) on adjoining trail systems. Trails are mostly packed dirt or gravel roads with maybe some walking in the dry wash of Sonoita Creek. Patagonia Rest Stop is a mix of paved road and packed dirt trail.
