The University of Arizona: Program in Applied Mathematics Colloquium – Agora: Applied Mathematics of AI

Presenter: Michael (Misha) Chertkov, Program in Applied Mathematics, University of Arizona

The Agora, a central public space in Ancient Greece, served as a platform for citizens to engage in political, philosophical, and social discourse. In our inaugural event of, “Applied Mathematics Agora”, we aim to recreate this spirit of open discussion. This gathering is designed for AM GIDP students, affiliates, friends, and anyone interested in exploring thought-provoking topics in mathematics and its applications.

Taking inspiration from Alan Newell’s call to “make the Applied Mathematics Colloquium great again”, I will kick off the series with discussions on:

1) The AI Landscape: Automatic Differentiation, Deep (including Reinforcement) Learning, AI Diffusion and Transformers

2) The Excitement Surrounding AI in Sciences

3) A Brief and Subjective Overview of “my” Applied Math in AI, mentioning Diffusion Models, Fluid Mechanics, and Power Systems.

The approximately 30-35 minute talk will be followed by an open discussion and Q&A session. If you would like to secure a brief slot for contributions/objections/comments, please let us know in advance. And, of course, everyone is welcome to join the spontaneous conversation as we go along.

Place: Math 501 (talk + discussion) https://map.arizona.edu/89,  followed by a local pub (more discussion)
