The University of Arizona: CPM Spotlight Session #3 – Using Algebra Tiles from Polynomials to Factoring (High School)

Manipulatives in a secondary math classroom? Absolutely!

In this session, you’ll experience how successful it can be! Build on students’ understanding of an area model for multiplication from lower grades by using algebra tiles to multiply polynomials, factor, and complete the square. Algebra tiles increase conceptual understanding that leads to proficiency once students no longer need the tiles. Additionally, the tiles provide students with a tactile engaging experience. Participants will practice a series of problems they can use with students to build their conceptual understanding of these topics. A series of problems from student lessons are included in the handout, beginning with diamond problems.
