The University of Arizona: Ancestors, Astronomy, and the Age of the Earth – Math to Understand the World Part #2

How big is the solar system? How closely are you and I related? How old is the earth? We will put to good use everything we have learned about exponential functions, geometry and geometric series to find fascinating and surprising answers to these questions.

The goal of this high school workshop is to show that mathematics is not just about abstractly manipulating numbers and equations, but that it is a powerful tool to think quantitatively about problems in other subjects such as physics, biology, history, and many more. In this spirit I will present ideas for interdisciplinary modules suitable for high school education that connect mathematics to other sciences.

This workshop is part of the outreach effort of NSF project 2111748 in mathematical physics.
