SUMMARY:The University of Arizona: Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore the cutting-edge of astronomical innovation on this 90-minute guided tour of the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab at the University of Arizona. Learn how pioneering engineering\, optical science\, and precision manufacturing come together to create the world’s largest and most advanced telescope mirrors—each 8.4 meters (27 feet) in diameter. \nLocated beneath the U of A’s football stadium\, the Mirror Lab is the birthplace of mirrors for the Giant Magellan Telescope\, a revolutionary new instrument with a 25-meter primary mirror composed of seven of our 8.4-meter segments. This next generation of telescopes will transform astronomy—probing the early universe\, revealing the formation of the first stars\, and potentially detecting signs of life on distant exoplanets. \nThe tour begins at the historic Steward Observatory\, U of A’s first research department\, established in 1917. After an introductory presentation in our iconic white-brick dome\, we’ll walk to the Mirror Lab for an up-close look at the unique processes involved—from melting glass to precision polishing and optical testing. \nJoin us and discover how the University of Arizona is shaping the future of space exploration and astronomical discovery.

SUMMARY:Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: City Nature Challenge Practice Hike
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the April 24-27 City Nature Challenge and free smartphone apps that can help you identify plants\, animals\, and more\, while helping contribute to science! \n\nJoin Ranger Eric on a short\, easy walk between the Nature Center and the Quail Trailhead while we learn about the free iNaturalist app you can use to identify any living organism on the planet with your smartphone\, while also increasing our knowledge of where they live. If you are wanting to participate in the April 24-27 Greater Phoenix City Nature Challenge\, we will have information to get you started too! This bioblitz-style competition challenges local communities to make the most observations of biodiversity in their area during this 4-day period using iNaturalist\, and then this data is available for science\, management\, and conservation. This particular City Nature Challenge will focus on the Phoenix Metro area\, including all of our Maricopa County Parks. For more info\, check out the following link: https://greaterphoenixcnc.com/ \n*If you would like to learn how to document nature observations via iNaturalist\, please download the free app at home and register an account prior to arrival. \nMEETING LOCATION: Nature Center \nGoogle Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/6su7XD7hjThe5zsZ8 \nLimit 20 participants. To register\, please call the Nature Center at 602-506-2930 ext. 6 with your name\, phone number\, and number of people attending. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered\, please call the Nature Center ASAP so we may contact those on the waiting list. Registration for this program will close on 4/15. \nApril is Citizen Science Month! Citizen Science Month 2026 is an official partner of America 250\, the campaign to celebrate the United States of America’s semi-quincentennial anniversary. Help us reach 2.50 Million Acts of Science by reporting your iNaturalist observations to SciStarter! Create an account on SciStarter.org\, an ASU research affiliate\, and add your iNat username to settings (under “Affiliation Integration”)—do this once\, and all your observations count! Why join SciStarter? Earn credit\, explore more projects\, and help measure impact! Questions? SUMMARY:Tucson Bird Alliance: Explore the Tanque Verde Wash
DESCRIPTION:Birds love riparian (streamside) habitats with native plants\, making this location\, which is home to both\, one of the “birdiest” spots on the east side of Tucson. We’ll explore about 2 miles along the wash\, with good chances of seeing raptors\, woodpeckers\, busy songbirds\, ground-hugging sparrows\, and towhees. I’ll point out the Watershed Management Group’s efforts to remove invasive Arundo donax (giant reed) and the return of native species. Limited to 12 participants. \nBring a sunhat\, drinking water\, and wear sturdy walking shoes. \nTrip difficulty: Moderate. Walking distance: 2 miles\, much of it in a sandy wash with limited shade. No restrooms or drinking water available. \nTrip Leader: Karen Howe (karenhowepdx@gmail.com) \nRegistration for Tucson Bird Alliance members is free. Non-members can join for a nonrefundable fee of $5. \nDriving directions: Take Tanque Verde Road east\, about 8 miles past the intersection with the Catalina Highway. Turn right on Wentworth Road after the Forty Niners Country Club estates. Park on the north side of the road just before it crosses the wash. Please consider carpooling\, as parking is limited.
