This popular destination near the intersection of Ina and Oracle Roads has cultivated gardens\, art exhibits\, and winding trails with many typical birds of the Sonoran Desert and its suburban habitats. Hummingbirds\, in particular\, flock to the gardens to enjoy the abundance of flowers. In addition to birding\, participants will learn a bit about the Sonoran Desert and the history of Tohono Chul. Meet at 9:30 AM at the Tohono Chul admissions window. Wrap up by 11 AM. At the walk’s conclusion\, a live raptor presentation will be available to all participants on site!\n\n\nMeet at the Tohono Chul Admission Window. DESCRIPTION:The Verde Valley has breathtaking natural beauty and is home to hundreds of bird species. Arizona is part of an international program recognizing places that are special to birds and the Verde Valley has four such places!  This event is a fun celebration of the Verde Valley’s bird habitat that will feature photos and information about many beautiful bird species. \nThe designated Important Bird Areas (IBAs) of the Verde Valley range from the vast expanses of the Sonoran desert to community parks like Watson and Willow Lakes in Prescott. These sites achieved their designations with the efforts of local volunteer birders that documented the unique value of these areas for birds. The Verde Valley Birding Festival has field trips to visit these areas in the local communities that have a strong connection to the Verde River. We will celebrate partners of the IBA program such as AZGFD\, Friends of the Verde River and Northern Arizona Audubon\, and bird species such as Common Black Hawk\, Yellow-billed Cuckoo\, beautiful warblers\, towhees and many more. \n  \n  \n  \nPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival. Experience birding during the peak Spring migration season at Dead Horse Ranch State Park on the banks of the Verde River. Close proximity to the Verde\, Oak Creek\, Sycamore Creek\, and other perennial waters offers a wide selection of guided tours\, hikes\, and workshops in one of Arizona’s richest birding habitats. \nOur experienced guides have extensive knowledge of birds and the unique habitat that makes this region special. SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Sycamore Canyon Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Known as the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness\, it is a remote\, protected\, and scenic area that cuts through the Mogollon Rim\, offering a stunning\, less-visited alternative to the nearby Sedona red rocks\, complete with a perennial creek and lush riparian habitat. \nYou might encounter Gray Vireo\, Scott’s Oriole\, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher\, Brewer’s\, Lark and Black-throated sparrows\, Common Black Hawk\, White-throated Swift\, Bell’s & Plumbeous Vireo\, Verdin and Summer Tanager. \nThere are no bathroom facilities during this trip.  After birding along the Mogollon rim\, you will bring your lunch and water into the canyon.  You will descend a relatively steep\, dry trail” 160 feet into the canyon. The trail will then be fairly level.  This portion of the walk is about 2.5 miles out and back. West Clear Creek is one of several perennial spring-fed streams that flow from the Mogollon Rim into the Verde River. SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Upper Verde IBA Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:IBA Trip\n\nImportant Bird Areas are designated for good reason\, and the Upper Verde IBA is indeed special. We will have the rare opportunity to access the verdant confluence of Granite Creek and the Verde Headwaters through private property. We will walk along Stillman Lake below basalt cliffs to a collection of fascinating petroglyphs. Birds possible in the confluence area include Peregrine Falcon\, Common Black Hawk\, Zone-tailed Hawk\, Summer Tanager\, Canyon and Rock Wrens\, migrating warblers and flycatchers\, etc. There will be some discussion of conservation efforts and potential threats to this ecosystem. We will have lunch at the lovely Little Thumb Butte B&B. With remaining time\, we may look for prairie dogs\, Burrowing Owls\, and other grassland species and consider other conservation issues.\n\nDetails: It’s a 45-mile (75-minute drive) over Mingus Mt. to the Safeway in Chino Valley\, where we will have a restroom break and allow other participants to meet us. We will drive 15 minutes from there to Little Thumb Butte B&B and hike down a rocky ranch road to the confluence. Boots or sturdy footwear required\, long pants recommended\, and trekking pole could be useful. Expect 2-3 miles of walking\, though pace will be slow. Rattlesnakes live in the area. SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Prescott - Watson and Willow Lakes Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Ah\, Willow and Watson! These two lakes are the very heart of the Willow-Watson Important Bird Area\, bordered by the magnificent Prescott Dells. They are also the top two eBird hotspots for Yavapai County. This trip will be easy walking on level trails\, about two miles total.  We will tour Watson Woods looking for returning songbirds\, with emphasis on our western species such as Bullock’s Oriole\, Bridled Titmouse\, and the tiny Lucy’s Warbler. If lake levels are good\, we will check the shorelines for migrating shorebirds\, gulls\, and lingering ducks.  This tour should provide a good start to your Festival birdlist\, for sure! You will be invited to join Susan for lunch afterwards at The Palace in Prescott. This trip will take you to one of the locals’ favorite hot spots on the banks of Oak Creek. Bubbling Ponds has been a project of the Northern Arizona Audubon with trails\, invasive plant species eradication and habitat restoration and is part of the Lower Oak Creek Important Birding Area. The Audubon Society identified habitat at the Page Springs Fish Hatchery and riparian area along lower Oak Creek as an Important Bird Area (IBA)\, and it draws thousands of wildlife watching enthusiasts each year.
