DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to Astro-Instrumentation\nOur middle school camp is now a fast-paced\, three-day program running from Wednesday to Friday\, 4 pm to 10 pm! Designed for rising 7th\, 8th\, and 9th graders\, this condensed format still delivers all the excitement of astronomical research. Through hands-on experiments\, nighttime observing\, and real data collection\, campers step into the role of a scientist. If your student dreams of operating a telescope or gathering data with a spectrograph\, they’ll feel right at home in this immersive midweek adventure. \nDesigned for students going into 7th\, 8th\, or 9th grade in the fall\, this year at middle school camp\, students will learn how to navigate the night sky. Campers will be able to operate telescopes and other scientific instruments to aid in their mission. DESCRIPTION:Do you love feeding and interacting with reptiles? Sign up for this half-day camp to act like a volunteer with activities\, interactions\, and real animal care opportunities! \nThe Keeper Program is designed to give children too young to participate in our Adult Volunteer Program a chance to learn and work at PHS.  Each day is three hours long and focuses on animal care and interactions. Younger campers (our Neonate Keepers and Junior Keepers) will focus on smaller animal care activities like tortoise feeding\, bathing tortoises and calm lizards\, and animal related crafts/activities. Older campers (Advanced Keepers) will get the opportunity to do more advanced volunteer activities like cleaning and breaking down enclosures\, feeding reptiles\, and more! \nAges: Junior\, Ages 8 – 11 \nPrice: $50 per day \nYour registration for a day camp will include: \n\n1 snack per day & water refills\n3 hours of fun activities/crafts\, animal interactions\, and practice taking care of animals (feeding/cleaning enclosures)\n\nInteractions: YES with nonvenomous animals\, this is an essential part of our camp \nWe recommend this for any child who has never attended our summer camps before. \n

SUMMARY:Highlands Center for Natural History: Natural History Book Club - "The Language of Trees: A Rewilding of Literature and Landscape" by Katie Holten
DESCRIPTION:Sitting in the Highlands Center ramada while the wind rustles through the ponderosa pine needles and a robin chirps\, there is a moment of silent contemplation. Natural history is complicated – personal and universal at the same time. Our Natural History book club met beginning in 2021 and the discussions occasionally resulted in these special moments of quiet thoughtfulness. \nWe’re excited to continue to offer this free and open to the public program. Reading is something on many of our “to-do” lists\, but some of us need a little extra incentive\, like having a group that meets monthly to discuss. This group focuses on books related to natural history\, with some southwestern component\, written in the last decade or so. Books are selected by the group and then sold in the Benson Family Nature Store. We take our time reading – two months for each book. And we encourage personal connections\, as well as universal questioning\, when we come together for our meetings.
