DESCRIPTION:Southeastern Arizona is a paradise for birders. Join us for three full days exploring different elevation habitats as we search for great birds! \nAmong our targets will be the Mexican Chickadee\, Elegant Trogon\, Montezuma Quail\, Painted Redstart and Red-faced Warbler.  We will also do some owling at night and set up a blacklight to see what insects we can attract. Our leader is Jeff Babson\, owner of Sky Island Tours\, who is an expert birder\, plus has a keen eye for butterflies and dragonflies. DESCRIPTION:Sitting in the Highlands Center ramada while the wind rustles through the ponderosa pine needles and a robin chirps\, there is a moment of silent contemplation. Natural history is complicated – personal and universal at the same time. Our Natural History book club met beginning in 2021 and the discussions occasionally resulted in these special moments of quiet thoughtfulness. \nWe’re excited to continue to offer this free and open to the public program. Reading is something on many of our “to-do” lists\, but some of us need a little extra incentive\, like having a group that meets monthly to discuss. This group focuses on books related to natural history\, with some southwestern component\, written in the last decade or so. Books are selected by the group and then sold in the Benson Family Nature Store. We take our time reading – two months for each book. And we encourage personal connections\, as well as universal questioning\, when we come together for our meetings. SUMMARY:Lowell Observatory: Orbits Curiosity Early Learners Camp - Sun: Energy from the Sun
DESCRIPTION:Children will construct and launch a hot air balloon and will also build a device to harness the power of the Sun. \nFun and Learning with STEAM \nCreated for children ages 3 to 6\, these activity-based\, hands-on camps explore science and include STEAM elements. Camps are usually held on the first and third Saturdays of each month unless otherwise noted. Even though there are two classes offered per month\, the same lesson will be taught throughout a given month. \nThese 90-minute camps — led by Lowell educators — occur from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Parents can explore topics in physics and astronomy with their children. Activities include science investigations\, games\, storytime\, music\, engineering\, art\, and more! Maximum 14 children per camp. \nMembers: $20 per child\nNon-members: $25 per child \nParent attendance is MANDATORY. The prices listed are per session. You may register for one month at a time or for multiple dates. Discounts will apply for registering multiple children and/or dates. \nScholarships are available for those who demonstrate financial need. Apply here.

Learn how pioneering engineering\, optical science\, and precision manufacturing come together to create the world’s largest and most advanced telescope mirrors—each 8.4 meters (27 feet) in diameter. \nLocated beneath the U of A’s football stadium\, the Mirror Lab is the birthplace of mirrors for the Giant Magellan Telescope\, a revolutionary new instrument with a 25-meter primary mirror composed of seven of our 8.4-meter segments. This next generation of telescopes will transform astronomy—probing the early universe\, revealing the formation of the first stars\, and potentially detecting signs of life on distant exoplanets. \nThe tour begins at the historic Steward Observatory\, U of A’s first research department\, established in 1917. This next generation of telescopes will transform astronomy—probing the early universe\, revealing the formation of the first stars\, and potentially detecting signs of life on distant exoplanets. \nThe tour begins at the historic Steward Observatory\, U of A’s first research department\, established in 1917. DESCRIPTION:The San Pedro River\, a narrow green oasis rippling through desert grassland\, is one of the last wild rivers in the Southwest and one of the most endangered. These 3-hour guided walks through desert grassland and among towering cottonwood trees will introduce you to the birds and other wildlife that make their homes in the sanctuary of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. River Walks depart from Casa de San Pedro Bed & Breakfast. \n$15 per person for adult members of SABO and/or guests of Casa de San Pedro Bed & Breakfast\, $20 for adult non-members. SUMMARY:Central Arizona Conservation Alliance: Community Science Monitoring of Urban Saguaro Health: The Saguaro Monitoring Program within the Desert Botanical Garden’s Saguaro Initiatives
DESCRIPTION:The Saguaro Census\, organized by the Desert Botanical Garden\, provides an important snapshot of saguaro distribution across the Phoenix Valley. \nHowever\, long-term monitoring is essential to strengthen these data and better understand changes in plant health and survival over time. To address this need\, the Saguaro Monitoring Program was developed as a student- and volunteer-led initiative in which community members are assigned a plot of approximately 20 saguaros that they visit regularly to document plant health and condition. As the project completes its first year of surveys\, results from the initial monitoring effort will be presented\, along with a discussion of the benefits and challenges of using community science to monitor urban plant populations. \n  \nCAZCA is dedicated to hosting inclusive\, accessible events so all participants can engage in and enjoy the program.
