SUMMARY:Cave Creek Museum: The Arizona Gold Mining Experience™
DESCRIPTION:The Cave Creek Museum’s AZ GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™ is unique with its display of the complete hard rock ore extraction process\, with the mine shaft\, tramway\, ore carts\, crushing and extraction\, that are always on display\, but operated only during these events. \nThe highlight is Arizona’s only fully operational ten-stamp ore crushing mill. The ten 1\,000-lb stamps slam down in synchronized motion to pound the ore removed from the mine into a fine gravel. The stamp mill was brought from its former location at the Golden Reef Mine on Continental Mountain to where it sits today. This is the only operational mining stamp mill in Arizona today that sits only 5 miles from its original site on the mountain. \nThe program begins with a lively recounting of Cave Creek Mining District’s heyday\, followed by a visit to the arrastre\, a primitive apparatus that pulverized ore with the power of beast or man. Hold onto your hats when the old mine blows its top! Then onto the Golden Reef Stamp Mill and Tramway\, where our highly trained and dedicated “Dream Team” fires up the engines of the stamp mill and once again the mountainsides echo with the crashing beat of the mechanical crusher. Watch as the tramway carries ore to be pulverized! \nThen onto the Blacksmith Shop for a demonstration of skill that was highly valued in a time where parts and tools had to be fabricated on site. Next be sure to try your luck at our Gold-panning station\, where docents will show you how to pan for ore and minerals just like the old prospectors did. Maybe you’ll strike gold! \nRemember\, your admission ($20 for guests 13 yrs and up\, children 12 yrs and under are free**) is also good for a leisurely tour of the Museum’s Historical and Archaeology collections and be sure to visit our other Outdoor Exhibits: the collection of many other articles from Cave Creek’s mining and agricultural past\, the Historic First Church\, and our TB Cabin\, which is on the National Register of Historic Places as the only known existing tubercular cabin from that era. \nGet ready to travel back in Time!\nNote: this program is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes long and largely takes place in the Outside Exhibit Area. It is not ADA compliant. Footing is uneven and slightly hilly in places. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sunscreen! \n**Due to the popularity of The AZ GOLD MINING EXPERIENCE™\, tickets must be pre-purchased.  No Membership Discounts. Culture Passes will not be accepted for this event.  Tickets are non-refundable\, but may be used for an Arizona Gold Mining Experience 90 days from purchased date by calling Staff at 480-488-2764.  Refunds will only be issued for cancellations due to inclement weather and circumstances beyond our control.

SUMMARY:Arizona State Parks & Trails: Central Arizona Smelters
DESCRIPTION:Some of Arizona’s earliest mining and refining can be found in central Arizona from Jerome to Mayer. Mining activities started shortly after the establishment of the Arizona Territory in 1863. \nThe first smelter began operation in 1866 to process lead and silver ores along the Agua River. This presentation will discuss the process of materials going from the mine to the refined metals and the different smelters in the Verde Valley area. \nAbout Our Speaker \n\n\nBrian Beck\, CPG\, RG has wandered across most of the Southwest for over 50 years\, being paid to hike the hills and pick-up rocks. Of course\, this all relates to geological work concerning mineral resources and environmental nit-picking (the act of excessively focusing on\, or criticizing\, minor and trivial details). He has worked both underground and still aboveground\, mostly. He still works with paper maps\, Brunton\, paper notebook and hand-lens (the lens have gone from 8x to 50x).

SUMMARY:Agave Heritage Festival: Agave Crafted by Landscapes Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Across Mexico\, agave grows in landscapes defined by soil\, climate\, elevation\, and season. These conditions shape how the plant develops in the field\, influencing everything from sugar formation to harvest decisions\, and ultimately the flavors that appear in the glass. \nIn this seminar\, we explore terroir in practical terms. How do soil composition and elevation influence agave maturation? What role do rainfall patterns and temperature shifts play in development? And how do local growing conditions guide the choices producers make in cultivation and harvest? \nDrawing on real production experience across multiple agave-growing regions\, this conversation centers on origin: the land\, climate\, and environmental conditions that shape agave long before it becomes spirit. \nTogether\, we’ll explore how these differences reveal themselves in aroma\, texture\, and flavor. \n  \n  \nPart of the Agave Heritage Festival \nTo celebrate and sustain the cultural\, ecological\, and economic significance of agave through binational collaboration\, storytelling\, and community-rooted experiences. \nWe bring together voices from the Sonoran Desert and beyond to honor agave’s legacy and ignite collective action for a more resilient future.
