SUMMARY:The University of Arizona: Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore the cutting-edge of astronomical innovation on this 90-minute guided tour of the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab at the University of Arizona. Learn how pioneering engineering\, optical science\, and precision manufacturing come together to create the world’s largest and most advanced telescope mirrors—each 8.4 meters (27 feet) in diameter. \nLocated beneath the U of A’s football stadium\, the Mirror Lab is the birthplace of mirrors for the Giant Magellan Telescope\, a revolutionary new instrument with a 25-meter primary mirror composed of seven of our 8.4-meter segments. This next generation of telescopes will transform astronomy—probing the early universe\, revealing the formation of the first stars\, and potentially detecting signs of life on distant exoplanets. \nThe tour begins at the historic Steward Observatory\, U of A’s first research department\, established in 1917. After an introductory presentation in our iconic white-brick dome\, we’ll walk to the Mirror Lab for an up-close look at the unique processes involved—from melting glass to precision polishing and optical testing. \nJoin us and discover how the University of Arizona is shaping the future of space exploration and astronomical discovery.

SUMMARY:The University of Arizona: New Regimes of Coherent Light-Matter Interaction in Van Der Waals Materials
DESCRIPTION:Van Der Waals materials have emerged as a revolutionary platform for photonics\, offering a unique combination of direct-bandgap semiconductor properties and unprecedented flexibility for heterostructure integration. These materials exhibit simultaneously strong optical responses and unusual physical properties that enable access to coherent light-matter interaction regimes previously considered inaccessible in traditional bulk materials. \nIn this talk\, we will discuss a few examples\, including the observation of collective Lamb shift1 and achievement of perfect absorption2 within a same monolayer\, the development of unconventional types of strong-coupling systems with unique properties3–5\, and an approach that utilizes some of the novel effects to enable a dynamic matter-light hybrid Chern insulator6\,7. These advances open new pathways to next generation photonic devices and quantum technologies. \nPresented by Hui Deng. \nHui Deng is a Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. Her research centers on the creation\, control\, and application of single- and many-body quantum states in matter-light coupled systems\, with an overarching goal of developing robust quantum systems for future technology. She received her BS in Modern Applied Physics from Tsinghua University\, followed by an MS in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Applied Physics from Stanford University. She is a recipient of the NSF Career Awards\, AFOSR Young Investigator Awards\, and the Humboldt Foundation Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award. She is a fellow of APS and Optica. \n

SUMMARY:Tucson Bird Alliance: Introduction to Sonoran Desert Birds - Sabino Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Trip Rating: Moderate. Walking Distance: 2 miles on uneven dirt trails with some steps. \nThis trip is ideal for beginner birders or visitors eager to learn about the birds of the Sonoran Desert. If you’re an experienced birder\, I’ll be asking for your help. \nWe’ll explore the less-traveled area accessed from the Sabino Canyon overflow parking lot. I’ll take you on a new trail\, and we’ll look and listen for birds. This is a quiet time of year for birds\, but we can enjoy this beautiful area and each other’s company no matter what. \nWe might walk up to 2 miles on trails that are uneven and rocky in spots. Bring a sunhat\, drinking water\, and wear sturdy walking shoes. \nMeet at the Sabino Canyon Overflow Parking lot. The overflow lot is accessed by taking Sabino Canyon Road about ¼ mile past the main entrance. Turn right and follow the road to the end of the parking area. \nSabino Canyon requires a $8 per car parking fee at the National Recreation Area or an Interagency Recreation Pass. \nTrip Leader: Karen Howe (karenhowepdx@gmail.com)

SUMMARY:Tucson Bird Alliance: Tohono Chul Garden Walk
DESCRIPTION:For out-of-town visitors and those new to the Sonoran Desert\, Tohono Chul’s easy-walking trails and beautiful gardens provide close-up looks at many of the typical birds of the Sonoran Desert.\n\nOf the more than 500 bird species that spend time in Arizona during the year\, 140 are known to have visited Tohono Chul\, and on any given morning you might see up to 15 species here. All year long you can watch our state bird\, the Cactus Wren\, flit from cactus to tree and back again\, chattering as he goes. Observe the Curved-billed Thrasher\, with its saucy two-part whistle\, scrabbling on the ground or nesting in cholla cactus. Enjoy our two year-round resident hummingbird species\, Anna’s and Costa’s\, as they dart about\, feeding among the many colorful flowers. And be sure to look upward for a glimpse at our majestic Cooper’s Hawks\, a pair of which has nested in the gardens for each of the last four years.\n\nMeet at the Tohono Chul Admission Window. Limited to 10 participants.\n\nTohono Chul entrance fee will be waived for trip participants. This program is being offered in partnership with Tohono Chul.\n\nLeader: Ray Deeney\, Carol Massanari\, and rotating Tohono Chul Docent Guides
