SUMMARY:OWASP Phoenix Chapter: April Meeting - AI: The Good\, the Bad\, and the Ugly
DESCRIPTION:AI: The Good\, the Bad\, and the Ugly (And Why Guardrails Matter) \n\nPresenter: Gary Perkins \nPresentation: AI is moving faster than most organizations can govern it. Between vendor hype\, rushed deployments\, and well-intentioned experiments gone sideways\, it’s getting harder to tell where AI genuinely helps and where it quietly introduces new risk. \nThis talk takes a practical\, no-nonsense look at AI through three lenses: the good\, the bad\, and the ugly. We’ll walk through real examples of AI done right\, common failures caused by missing guardrails\, and uncomfortable edge cases where AI creates more problems than it solves. \nAttendees will leave with a clearer mental model of AI risk\, a grounded view of where guardrails help (and where they don’t)\, and practical guidance for using AI without blindly trusting it.

SUMMARY:Scottsdale Community College: Worlds Without End
DESCRIPTION:Since the initial discovery in 1995\, astronomers have detected over 6000 exoplanets. Several hundred are Earth-like and potentially habitable\, projecting to ten billion across the Milky Way. The talk will summarize the search for life in the universe\, starting with the Solar System\, and moving to the larger regions of space\, where there is at least one planet for every star in the galaxy. The first detection of life beyond Earth is finally within reach. \nChris Impey is a University Distinguished Professor of Astronomy at the University of Arizona. He has over 450 publications on education\, observational cosmology\, galaxies\, and quasars. Chris Impey is a winner of the American Astronomical Society’s career Education Prize from. He’s also been NSF Distinguished Teaching Scholar\, Carnegie Council’s Arizona Professor of the Year\, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor. He has written 120 popular articles on cosmology\, astrobiology and education\, two textbooks\, a novel called Shadow World\, and ten popular science trade books.

SUMMARY:City of Chandler: The Nature of Things - The Arizona Trail
DESCRIPTION:Join skilled storytellers for a cup of coffee and candid conversation that entertains\, educates\, and encourages a sense of wonder about science and the natural world around us. \nThis speaker series hosts guest lecturers and light refreshments. Along the 850-mile Arizona Trail\, which spans the length of the state from Utah to Mexico\, diverse ecosystems showcase how climate change is actively altering life as we know it across the Southwest. \nDuring fall 2025\, The Arizona Republic newspaper’s climate reporter\, who earned a Ph.D. in ecology before becoming an award-winning journalist\, spent seven weeks traveling the full trail on her mountain bike to witness these threats\, document their impacts\, and consult with experts on solutions. Rich with photos and video from the journey as well as scientific expertise and cultural context\, this presentation takes audiences through the state’s biggest environmental challenges and opportunities\, mile by mile. From the northern forests torched by a massive fire that closed parts of Grand Canyon National Park in 2025\, to the longstanding drought causing conflict with tribes on the slopes of the San Francisco peaks\, to the energy solutions underway in the Superstition Mountains\, to the humanitarian urgency for answers illuminated at the border with Mexico – Joan Meiners’ trail journey is a scenic and dynamic window into some of Arizona’s most pressing problems\, told from the frontlines of journalistic exploration through literal living landscapes. \nHeld at Downtown Chandler Public Library

SUMMARY:The University of Arizona: Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore the cutting-edge of astronomical innovation on this 90-minute guided tour of the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab at the University of Arizona. Learn how pioneering engineering\, optical science\, and precision manufacturing come together to create the world’s largest and most advanced telescope mirrors—each 8.4 meters (27 feet) in diameter. \nLocated beneath the U of A’s football stadium\, the Mirror Lab is the birthplace of mirrors for the Giant Magellan Telescope\, a revolutionary new instrument with a 25-meter primary mirror composed of seven of our 8.4-meter segments. This next generation of telescopes will transform astronomy—probing the early universe\, revealing the formation of the first stars\, and potentially detecting signs of life on distant exoplanets. \nThe tour begins at the historic Steward Observatory\, U of A’s first research department\, established in 1917. After an introductory presentation in our iconic white-brick dome\, we’ll walk to the Mirror Lab for an up-close look at the unique processes involved—from melting glass to precision polishing and optical testing. \nJoin us and discover how the University of Arizona is shaping the future of space exploration and astronomical discovery.
