Mission Garden: Exhibit Opening – Rarámuri Rancheria

Join us to celebrate the completion of the Rarámuri (Tarahumara) Rancheria at Mission Garden!

A rancheria was a functional living and working space built by Indigenous people throughout southern Arizona and northern Mexico around the 1900s, including by the Rarámuri people of northern Mexico. Our exhibit is built with wood from an original Rarámuri rancheria—historic, hand-hewn ponderosa and juniper that began growing as early as 1690. The Mission Garden rancheria also displays several Rarámuri artifacts, including a cart, plow, and other tools, and provides a spacious home for our Spanish heritage breed chickens.

At the exhibit opening, join us for short remarks, followed by activities for all ages to explore the history, ecology, and agriculture represented in this exhibit.

Thank you to the Southwestern Foundation for Education and Historical Preservation for their generous support of this project. Thank you to the many volunteers who donated their expertise and time.
