Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: 100 Miles in 100 Days Nature Hike
Check out two of the Preserve trails while learning about the flora, fauna, and diverse ecosystem of this desert riparian area with Ranger Eric. For those wanting to start or continue their progress towards the 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge (Nov. 1-Feb. 8), the hike up to Lykes Lookout hill is a short, but steep climb that can be good practice for feeling out your level of hiking difficulty. We will walk along the flatter River Ramble trail along the river, followed by the climb up to Lykes Lookout. If time allows, we may have time for another river trail nearby. Fall color may be present in the cottonwoods along the river by this time, making for beautiful hiking scenery. The trails are rated as easy-moderate, with River Ramble being mostly flat but occasionally uneven, but with Lykes Lookout being more strenuous with a steep, rocky incline. There is a bench at the base of Lykes Lookout in case anyone doesn’t feel comfortable doing that portion of the hike but wants to wait to go back with the others in the group. One-way distance is about 0.7-mile, but we will stop and look at plants and animals along the way, so this will not be a fast-paced fitness hike.
