SUMMARY:Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: City Nature Challenge Practice Hike
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the April 24-27 City Nature Challenge and free smartphone apps that can help you identify plants\, animals\, and more\, while helping contribute to science!  \n\nJoin Ranger Eric on a short\, easy walk between the Nature Center and the Quail Trailhead while we learn about the free iNaturalist app you can use to identify any living organism on the planet with your smartphone\, while also increasing our knowledge of where they live. If you are wanting to participate in the April 24-27 Greater Phoenix City Nature Challenge\, we will have information to get you started too! This bioblitz-style competition challenges local communities to make the most observations of biodiversity in their area during this 4-day period using iNaturalist\, and then this data is available for science\, management\, and conservation. This particular City Nature Challenge will focus on the Phoenix Metro area\, including all of our Maricopa County Parks. For more info\, check out the following link: https://greaterphoenixcnc.com/ \n*If you would like to learn how to document nature observations via iNaturalist\, please download the free app at home and register an account prior to arrival. \nMEETING LOCATION: Nature Center \nGoogle Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/6su7XD7hjThe5zsZ8 \nLimit 20 participants. To register\, please call the Nature Center at 602-506-2930 ext. 6 with your name\, phone number\, and number of people attending. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered\, please call the Nature Center ASAP so we may contact those on the waiting list. Registration for this program will close on 4/20. \nApril is Citizen Science Month! Citizen Science Month 2026 is an official partner of America 250\, the campaign to celebrate the United States of America’s semi-quincentennial anniversary. Help us reach 2.50 Million Acts of Science by reporting your iNaturalist observations to SciStarter! Create an account on SciStarter.org\, an ASU research affiliate\, and add your iNat username to settings (under “Affiliation Integration”)—do this once\, and all your observations count! Why join SciStarter? Earn credit\, explore more projects\, and help measure impact! Questions? Reach out! greaterphxcnc@googlegroups.com \nPLEASE NOTE: Outdoor programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather\, including extreme heat events. The Maricopa County Parks website (www.maricopa.gov/parks) is the most accurate resource for verifying the program’s status. SUMMARY:Earth Day 2026: The future we build
DESCRIPTION:The Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory® invites you to celebrate Earth Day by exploring the future we build. \nSince 2021\, GFL has served as Arizona State University’s hub for Earth Day. This year\, we will celebrate Earth Day featuring an afternoon designed to connect our community\, spark ideas and showcase pathways to a thriving planet. \nStarting with a catered lunch\, there will be opportunities to connect with colleagues\, students and partners across ASU. Then you can explore an interactive showcase featuring hands-on experiences that bring the future into focus — step into Dreamscape Learn’s virtual ecosystems\, sample local honey from ASU’s Bee Lab Annex and get up close with the Mechanical Tree. \nThe program continues with two dynamic conversations: a youth panel highlighting how students are driving impact through GFL partnerships\, followed by a Global Futures Conversation exploring what it truly means to live — and lead — in a time of accelerated global change. \nThe afternoon will close out with a special film screening in the Walton Center for Planetary Health auditorium\, highlighting the importance of caring for our world. Join us to reflect\, connect and imagine the future we build. \nLearn more about Earth Day at Global Futures Laboratory

SUMMARY:The University of Arizona: Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore the cutting-edge of astronomical innovation on this 90-minute guided tour of the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab at the University of Arizona. Learn how pioneering engineering\, optical science\, and precision manufacturing come together to create the world’s largest and most advanced telescope mirrors—each 8.4 meters (27 feet) in diameter. \nLocated beneath the U of A’s football stadium\, the Mirror Lab is the birthplace of mirrors for the Giant Magellan Telescope\, a revolutionary new instrument with a 25-meter primary mirror composed of seven of our 8.4-meter segments. This next generation of telescopes will transform astronomy—probing the early universe\, revealing the formation of the first stars\, and potentially detecting signs of life on distant exoplanets. \nThe tour begins at the historic Steward Observatory\, U of A’s first research department\, established in 1917. After an introductory presentation in our iconic white-brick dome\, we’ll walk to the Mirror Lab for an up-close look at the unique processes involved—from melting glass to precision polishing and optical testing. \nJoin us and discover how the University of Arizona is shaping the future of space exploration and astronomical discovery.

SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Pre-Event talk with Jennie MacFarland & Tice Supplee celebrating IBA's
DESCRIPTION:The Verde Valley has breathtaking natural beauty and is home to hundreds of bird species. Arizona is part of an international program recognizing places that are special to birds and the Verde Valley has four such places!  This event is a fun celebration of the Verde Valley’s bird habitat that will feature photos and information about many beautiful bird species. \nThe designated Important Bird Areas (IBAs) of the Verde Valley range from the vast expanses of the Sonoran desert to community parks like Watson and Willow Lakes in Prescott. These sites achieved their designations with the efforts of local volunteer birders that documented the unique value of these areas for birds. The Verde Valley Birding Festival has field trips to visit these areas in the local communities that have a strong connection to the Verde River. We will celebrate partners of the IBA program such as AZGFD\, Friends of the Verde River and Northern Arizona Audubon\, and bird species such as Common Black Hawk\, Yellow-billed Cuckoo\, beautiful warblers\, towhees and many more. \n  \n  \n  \nPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival. Experience birding during the peak Spring migration season at Dead Horse Ranch State Park on the banks of the Verde River. Close proximity to the Verde\, Oak Creek\, Sycamore Creek\, and other perennial waters offers a wide selection of guided tours\, hikes\, and workshops in one of Arizona’s richest birding habitats. \nOur experienced guides have extensive knowledge of birds and the unique habitat that makes this region special. The festival\, presented each April by Friends of the Verde River\, is a purpose-driven community benefit organization and 501(c) 3 non-profit working to preserve one of the last perennial flowing rivers in the American Southwest. \n

SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Upper Verde IBA Field Trip

SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Prescott - Watson and Willow Lakes Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Ah\, Willow and Watson! These two lakes are the very heart of the Willow-Watson Important Bird Area\, bordered by the magnificent Prescott Dells. They are also the top two eBird hotspots for Yavapai County. This trip will be easy walking on level trails\, about two miles total.  We will tour Watson Woods looking for returning songbirds\, with emphasis on our western species such as Bullock’s Oriole\, Bridled Titmouse\, and the tiny Lucy’s Warbler. If lake levels are good\, we will check the shorelines for migrating shorebirds\, gulls\, and lingering ducks.  This tour should provide a good start to your Festival birdlist\, for sure! You will be invited to join Susan for lunch afterwards at The Palace in Prescott. Everyone will pay for their own meal.  There is a $5 parking fee. \nRestaurant Link: https://palace-restaurant-saloon.shop/menu \nRating: 3\nTransportation: Self-drive\nCost: $60\nMeal: Optional – at The Palace\n  \n  \n  \nPPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival.

SUMMARY:Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Discovery Station - What is the City Nature Challenge?
DESCRIPTION:Stop by an information table where Ranger Derik will teach you how to use your phone to identify and document your nature findings to help the scientific community.  \n\nRanger Derik will host a drop-in information table to get you on your way to becoming a Citizen Scientist using the free iNaturalist app that identifies and documents nature photos that you take with your phone. Learn about flowers\, trees\, birds\, bugs and even fungi around you while creating a digital log of all the cool nature specimens you’ve seen on your adventures\, along with their locations and dates seen. At the same time\, you will create an online biodiversity record for the scientific community to use in studying populations\, occurrence ranges\, seasonal changes and more! Due to limited connectivity in parks\, it is advised to download the iNaturalist app while on wi-fi before arriving at the park. This information session can help you prepare for the annual City Nature Challenge\, where Team Phoenix will compete with cities around the world to upload on iNaturalist the greatest number of species from April 24-27. Wear closed-toe shoes\, a hat and sunscreen if you are hiking afterwards and bring plenty of water. Restrooms and water are available at the Discovery Center. \nPrecise Meeting Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/egZqVT9PxKpsKNqe6 \nNo registration required. \n\n  \nPart of Greater Phoenix City Nature Challenge 2026
