SUMMARY:Highlands Center for Natural History: Natural History Book Club - "The Language of Trees: A Rewilding of Literature and Landscape" by Katie Holten
DESCRIPTION:Sitting in the Highlands Center ramada while the wind rustles through the ponderosa pine needles and a robin chirps\, there is a moment of silent contemplation. Natural history is complicated – personal and universal at the same time. Our Natural History book club met beginning in 2021 and the discussions occasionally resulted in these special moments of quiet thoughtfulness. \nWe’re excited to continue to offer this free and open to the public program. Reading is something on many of our “to-do” lists\, but some of us need a little extra incentive\, like having a group that meets monthly to discuss. This group focuses on books related to natural history\, with some southwestern component\, written in the last decade or so. Books are selected by the group and then sold in the Benson Family Nature Store. We take our time reading – two months for each book. And we encourage personal connections\, as well as universal questioning\, when we come together for our meetings. People can jump in at any time! \nJoin the Natural History Book Club today! \nBook club meetings are the first Friday of each month from 1pm-2pm and meet in the beautiful outdoor setting of the Discovery Gardens Ramada\, weather depending. \n2026 Natural History Book Club Books and Dates: \n\nJune / July\nThe Language of Trees: A Rewilding of Literature and Landscape\, by Katie Holten

SUMMARY:iD Tech: BattleBots® Camp - 3D Printing and Take-Home Robot
DESCRIPTION:Bring your BattleBots® champion home after camp with the all-new iD Tech robotics kit! \nYou’ll build your own fighting robot from the ground up\, starting with a motor-driven chassis. Construct your bot’s frame and give it life by wiring a programmable brain! Then\, utilize 3D printing technology to manufacture armor and attachments. Iterate and refine your handiwork as your bot faces off against your peers’ creations in a gauntlet of challenges such as racing\, obstacle courses\, and capture the flag. All your work will culminate in a BattleBots®-style tournament where the winner takes all! Need replacement parts? No problem—you can print backup components to keep your bot in fighting shape. And when the dust settles\, you’ll pack up your robot and 3D-printed pieces to take home with you. \nPrerequisite: Ability to work in a team. Each student will be provided with an individual computer and kit and will share 3D Printers and arena time.\n\n\nAges 10 – 12\nJune 8 – 12

SUMMARY:iD Tech: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
DESCRIPTION:Machine learning has introduced many of today’s greatest technological advancements\, including object recognition. From self-driving cars to home security systems with intruder detection\, data scientists can help make the world a safer place. \nYou’ll take a look under the hood at how AI systems are built and machine learning models are trained. Develop your own system to recognize images\, like categorizing mammals or identifying Pokémon. Begin with Python essentials\, then launch into neural network training—you’ll build a model that decodes hand gestures and other video input in real-time. Utilize principal datasets like TensorFlow and Kaggle to design advanced detection projects\, such as a Pictionary game where your AI companion solves clues as you draw them! \nGuided by live instructors\, you’ll uncover key machine learning concepts through hands-on projects and thoughtful discussions around ethics\, privacy\, and responsible design. At the end of the week\, you’ll collect your work into a comprehensive machine learning portfolio fit for a college application. Your pursuit of a career in artificial intelligence could start here! \nPrerequisite: We recommend beginner students start with Python Camp: Intro to Coding & AI\n\n\nAges 13 – 17\nJune 8 – 12
