SUMMARY:Nerding: Space Explorers
DESCRIPTION:Calling all young adventurers to join our NERD Astronaut Training Program for an out-of-this-world journey through the cosmos! You have a lot to learn and a lot of astronaut training to do! \nBudding space explorers will dive deep into the mysteries of the universe. From unraveling the secrets of our solar system’s formation to discovering the forces that shape galaxies\, every day will be filled with exploration and discovery. How big are the planets\, really? How far away is the moon? We will build scale models to help us understand and visualize! \nThrough hands-on experiments\, participants will learn about the forces that govern our universe\, build and launch rockets into the stratosphere\, create their own comet\, and even simulate the landing of a Mars rover on the red planet’s surface (EGG DROP)! The wonders of space await… \nGrades 1 – 3 \nJune 1 – 5

SUMMARY:Patterson Observatory: Free Observation Night
DESCRIPTION:Public Night is held once a month on the Thursday nearest first quarter moon. Observing starts a half hour after sunset.  The event is weather dependent and is canceled in the event of clouds or inclement weather.  \nAdmission is free\, but space is limited.  Guests wishing to attend this in-person event must register. \n\n\n\n\nThe University South Foundation\, Inc. owns and maintains the Patterson Observatory located on University of Arizona Sierra Vista Campus. The Huachuca Astronomy Club (HAC) volunteers operates the observatory and hosts Public Viewing Nights. \n\n\nThese “Public Nights” are free and family friendly and start about a half hour after sunset. They are weather dependent (canceled during inclement weather) and are not scheduled during the monsoon months of July and  August. Space is limited and guests must register.  See the form below. The observatory is also available\, by appointment\, to serve youth\, school and community organizations. \nThe Patterson Observatory is  a NASA Space Place and a member of the NASA Night Sky Network. It has a 16 foot dome\, housing a Ritchey-Chretien  telescope of 20” aperture. This telescope\, with its sophisticated detectors\, is capable of observing objects one  million times fainter that the human eye can detect. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Lowell Observatory: Orbits Curiosity Middle School Camp - Astro-Instrumentation
DESCRIPTION:An Introduction to Astro-Instrumentation\nOur middle school camp is now a fast-paced\, three-day program running from Wednesday to Friday\, 4 pm to 10 pm! Designed for rising 7th\, 8th\, and 9th graders\, this condensed format still delivers all the excitement of astronomical research. Through hands-on experiments\, nighttime observing\, and real data collection\, campers step into the role of a scientist. If your student dreams of operating a telescope or gathering data with a spectrograph\, they’ll feel right at home in this immersive midweek adventure. \nDesigned for students going into 7th\, 8th\, or 9th grade in the fall\, this year at middle school camp\, students will learn how to navigate the night sky. Campers will be able to operate telescopes and other scientific instruments to aid in their mission. Other activities include team-building\, hiking\, drawing\, playing games\, and more. \nThese activity-based\, week-long day camps run from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. This year at middle school camp\, students will learn about instruments used in Astronomical Photography. \n  \nAges 12 – 14 \nJuly 1 – 3 \n

The wonders of space await… \nGrades 1 – 3 \nJuly 6 – July 10

SUMMARY:Lowell Observatory: Astrophotography Program
DESCRIPTION:Take the first step in your astrophotography journey with an intensive course at Lowell Observatory! \nThis 2-hour program accommodates a maximum of 6 guests. Using our 17-inch Planewave CDK Telescope and QSI 683 CCD camera\, you will be taken through the process of imaging two different objects. Then\, we will teach you how to combine\, stack\, and edit the shots into full-color images using a program called Pixinsight. At the end of the course\, you’ll take home digital copies of the two images and all of the raw data to use as you like\, as well as additional resources to aid you in your astrophotography journey! \nMembers of Lowell Observatory will receive a 20% discount on their course fee.
