SUMMARY:Central Arizona Conservation Alliance: Community Science Monitoring of Urban Saguaro Health: The Saguaro Monitoring Program within the Desert Botanical Garden’s Saguaro Initiatives
DESCRIPTION:The Saguaro Census\, organized by the Desert Botanical Garden\, provides an important snapshot of saguaro distribution across the Phoenix Valley. \nHowever\, long-term monitoring is essential to strengthen these data and better understand changes in plant health and survival over time. To address this need\, the Saguaro Monitoring Program was developed as a student- and volunteer-led initiative in which community members are assigned a plot of approximately 20 saguaros that they visit regularly to document plant health and condition. As the project completes its first year of surveys\, results from the initial monitoring effort will be presented\, along with a discussion of the benefits and challenges of using community science to monitor urban plant populations. \n  \nCAZCA is dedicated to hosting inclusive\, accessible events so all participants can engage in and enjoy the program. Please email us with your accessibility needs at cazca@dbg.org.

SUMMARY:Highlands Center for Natural History: Natural History Book Club - "The Wild Dark: Finding the Night Sky in the Age of Light" by Craig Childs
DESCRIPTION:Sitting in the Highlands Center ramada while the wind rustles through the ponderosa pine needles and a robin chirps\, there is a moment of silent contemplation. Natural history is complicated – personal and universal at the same time. Our Natural History book club met beginning in 2021 and the discussions occasionally resulted in these special moments of quiet thoughtfulness. \nWe’re excited to continue to offer this free and open to the public program. Reading is something on many of our “to-do” lists\, but some of us need a little extra incentive\, like having a group that meets monthly to discuss. This group focuses on books related to natural history\, with some southwestern component\, written in the last decade or so. Books are selected by the group and then sold in the Benson Family Nature Store. We take our time reading – two months for each book. And we encourage personal connections\, as well as universal questioning\, when we come together for our meetings. People can jump in at any time! \nJoin the Natural History Book Club today! \nBook club meetings are the first Friday of each month from 1pm-2pm and meet in the beautiful outdoor setting of the Discovery Gardens Ramada\, weather depending. \n2026 Natural History Book Club Books and Dates: \n\nApril / May\nThe Wild Dark: Finding the Night Sky in the Age of Light\, by Craig Childs

SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: IBA Survey Workshop - new eBird protocol
DESCRIPTION:The Arizona Important Bird Areas program is launching a streamlined survey protocol utilizing eBird. The surveys will be stationary\, 10 minute counts where all birds seen and heard are added to an eBird checklist. The same locations will be surveyed on every visit to create a dataset over time. Participants will receive a printed protocol document\, we will cover the logistics of such a survey and then do a few survey counts together. Participants need to be prepared to walk about a mile over uneven terrain. \n  \n  \n  \nPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival. Experience birding during the peak Spring migration season at Dead Horse Ranch State Park on the banks of the Verde River. Close proximity to the Verde\, Oak Creek\, Sycamore Creek\, and other perennial waters offers a wide selection of guided tours\, hikes\, and workshops in one of Arizona’s richest birding habitats. \nOur experienced guides have extensive knowledge of birds and the unique habitat that makes this region special. The festival\, presented each April by Friends of the Verde River\, is a purpose-driven community benefit organization and 501(c) 3 non-profit working to preserve one of the last perennial flowing rivers in the American Southwest. \nFestival site is at Dead Horse Ranch State Park.

SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: FLAGSTAFF - Anderson Mesa IBA BIG DAY Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Explore Northern Arizona’s Anderson Mesa with Wildlife Biologist and local birder\, Brooks Hart. In addition\, you will have Jennie MacFarland\, Director of Bird Conservation and a coordinator for Arizona IBA’s with you. \nAnderson Mesa is an Important Bird Area (IBA) comprising various habitat types\, and supports coniferous and deciduous trees\, pinyon pine & juniper dotted grasslands\, pothole lakes\, marshes and wetlands. Participants will have the opportunity to watch raptors glide and soar along the low bluffs overlooking Mormon Lake and pick out various species of waterfowl and shorebirds from Ashurst Lake and Lake Mary. We will look for passerines and early migrants moving through shrubs and trees that surround bodies of water. If we are lucky\, we will cross paths with a flock of Pinyon Jays\, a species of special conservation status. \nTransportation Option: Hop in the van or drive yourself\, either way keep your eyes peeled because large mammals such as elk\, pronghorn\, and deer are commonly spotted while travelling between stops. The van will depart Dead Horse Ranch State Park at 6:45AM or you can rendezvous with the rest of the group at Lake Mary Chevron (4026 S Lake Mary Rd) at 8AM.  We will return to Lake Mary Chevron at 3:30PM and the van will arrive back at Dead Horse Ranch State Park at 5PM. \nTimes: 6:45am-5pm (Vans) & 8am-3:30pm (Lake Mary meetup)\nRating: 3 (Long day\, though!)\nCost: $75\nMeal: Bring your own lunch\, drinks\, and snacks\nCapacity: 12\nTransportation: Option for van or self-drive (See details above)\n  \n  \n  \nPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival.

SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Sedona Wetlands & Red Rock State Park with Steven Prager & Melissa Fratello Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:We will start the day at Red Rock State Park\, getting in before the park opens with Tori Marshall\, Ranger. Tori will lead us in about a 4 hour program including an introductory movie about cleaning up that area of Oak Creek and possibly meeting Moonlight\, the Owl. We will then head off to the Sedona Wetlands. The use of man-made water treatment plants as birding sites by creating artificial wetlands has proven to be the source of excellent birding across the country\, especially when they are planned to provide rich habitat. The City of Sedona\, in keeping with the natural beauty of the area\, has not only taken care of the basic needs of the public but has done so with nature in mind. \nThis will be followed by lunch. \n\nRating: 3\nTransportation: Vans\nMeal: We hope at Sedona Beer Co’s Basecamp Location\nCapacity: 12\nCost: $150\n\n  \n  \n  \nPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival. SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Keynote Banquet and Presentation by Melissa Fratello & Steven Prager
DESCRIPTION:Following a catered dinner\, Melissa and Steve will share their talk. \nMelissa and Steve will discuss the theme of “Reciprocal Birding”\, sharing insights (and bloopers) from the writing of their recently published field guide Birds of Arizona and New Mexico\, and the under-wielded power of birders to turn the tide on habitat and population declines. \nIn their roles as conservationists in Southeast Arizona\, they’ve observed an often distinct separation of birding and bird conservation. By empowering the birding community to take direct action on behalf of birds\, and offering approachable and fun ways for birders to do what they can\, when they can\, and where they can\, we can bridge that gap and secure a brighter future for birds and birders. \nThere is a no food option offered this year. You will see it when you register. The cost for this is $35/person and your start time will be 6:00 PM. \nCost: $65 for entry & meal -or- $35 for just entry (no food)\nLocation: TBD\nMeal: Catered Dinner (optional)\nRating: 1\n  \n  \n  \nPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival. SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Beavers and Otters of Arizona - Nature’s Engineers and Playful Predators
DESCRIPTION:Arizona’s rivers\, streams\, and wetlands are home to two fascinating semi-aquatic mammals—the North American Beaver and the North American River Otter. While they share similar habitats\, these animals live very different lives. This educational talk explores how beavers and otters shape Arizona’s waterways and how to tell them apart in the wild. \nParticipants will learn the key physical and behavioral differences between beavers and otters\, including body shape\, tail type\, tracks\, swimming style\, and feeding habits. The program highlights how beavers act as ecosystem engineers by building dams that create vital wetland habitats\, while otters are agile predators known for their intelligence and playful behavior. \nThe presentation also covers where these species are found in Arizona\, their role in healthy aquatic ecosystems\, current conservation efforts\, and tips for spotting signs of their presence along rivers and riparian areas. With photos\, videos\, and real-world examples\, this talk offers a deeper appreciation for two of Arizona’s most charismatic water-loving mammals. \nCost: $25\nRating: 1\nTransportation: Self Drive to Cottonwood Rec Center\n  \n  \n  \nPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival. SUMMARY:Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: City Nature Challenge Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join Ranger Nikki on an easy to moderate hike to use your phone to document biodiversity in the park for the City Nature Challenge global Citizen Science competition that runs April 24-27. \n\nThe City Nature Challenge is a global competition between cities to document biodiversity in regions around the world\, taking place this year April 24-27. This “contest” showcases citizen science\, where ordinary people can make extraordinary contributions to global research. This year\, we are excited to have our citizen science programs be part of Citizen Science Month 2026\, which is an official partner of America 250\, the campaign to celebrate the United States of America’s semiquincentennial anniversary. You can double your impact on the initiative of reaching 2.50 Million Acts of Science by reporting your iNaturalist observations to SciStarter\, an organization that connects people to citizen science projects\, citizen scientists and resources. Create an account on SciStarter.org\, an ASU research affiliate\, and add your iNat username to settings (under “Affiliation Integration”). Do this once\, and all your observations count! \nRanger Nikki will lead a hike with stops along the way to take phone photos of flowers\, trees\, cacti\, birds\, bugs\, fungi and more to boost the number of observations for Team Phoenix. The route is a maximum 3 miles out-and-back hike using Slate and Flume Trails. The terrain is mostly level but has a few areas that are rocky and uneven. You can prepare for this hike by downloading the free iNaturalist app at home on wi-fi and registering your account before you come to the park. You can join the Greater Phoenix Area team beforehand or Ranger Nikki can help you navigate the app during the hike. Wear closed-toe shoes\, sun-protective clothing and a hat. Bring snacks and plenty of water. Be sure to bring your phone fully charged to take photos. You can upload photos to the app later at home. SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Beaver Believers Film and Panel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for some social time with light refreshments\, a movie and a chance to hear from local experts about beavers in Arizona. Movie will start at 5pm. \nAbout the film\nSometimes the best solutions to the biggest problems can be found in the most unexpected places.  Meet the beaver believers: five scientists and a sassy\, spicy hairdresser who are tackling climate change one stick at a time. \nThe Beaver Believers is the urgent yet whimsical story of an unlikely cadre of activists who share a common vision: restoring the North American Beaver\, that most industrious\, ingenious\, bucktoothed engineer\, to the watersheds of the arid West.  The Beaver Believers encourage us to embrace a new paradigm for managing our western lands\, one that seeks to partner with the natural world rather than overpower it.  As a keystone species\, beaver enrich their ecosystems\, creating the complexity and resiliency our watersheds need to absorb the impacts of climate change.  Beavers can show us the way and even do much of the work for us\, if only we can find the humility to trust in the restorative power of nature and our own ability to play a positive role within it.  Shot in 8 western US states\, Mexico\, and Canada\, through desert drought\, raging wild fires\, spring floods\, and wetland tranquility\, this film will change the way you think about climate change and inspire you to step up to confront the challenges we face. \nOur Panel\nWe will hear from two Arizona Game & Fish staff and Friends of the Verde River about work being done to help Arizona beavers. \nTransportation: Self Drive\nLocation: Cottonwood Rec Center\, Room 1\nMeal: Light Appetizers and beverages\nCost: $25\nCapacity: 50\n\n  \n  \n  \nPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival.

SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Wildlife Overpasses in Arizona
DESCRIPTION:This presentation provides an overview of the I-17 Willard Springs Wildlife Overpass\, a multi-agency project involving the Arizona Game and Fish Department\, Arizona Department of Transportation\, and the U.S. Forest Service. \nInterstate 17 serves as a critical travel corridor for people and is a significant barrier for northern Arizona’s wildlife. Using GPS wildlife movement data\, topographical\, geological\, and hydrological analysis\, our research identified the optimal location to reconnect fragmented habitats for elk\, mule deer\, and other native species. We will discuss how this project balances the diverse missions of our agency partners—from wildlife conservation to highway safety—while leveraging federal funding to build a safer\, more resilient landscape for both motorists and animals. \n  \nCost: $15.00 \n  \n  \n  \nPPart of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival \nJoin us 100 miles North of Phoenix in North Central Arizona’s Verde Valley for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival.
