Arizona – Sonora Desert Museum: Rainwater Harvesting Tour
In the Australian Outback everyone does it. In the Sonoran Desert the rain, in vain, falls mainly down the drain. But, not for everyone! See how this bounty can be harvested in a small park, on neighborhood tree-lined streets, in urban homes. Calculate how much water can be collected off of your own roof and find out about various options for storage and diversion. Participants will learn about and see many strategies they can apply at their own home and neighborhoods. The tour will be entirely outdoors.
Instructor(s): Sonya Norman
Where to Meet: Small park at 2525 N. Treat Ave.
What to Bring: Water, notepad and pen. Wear comfortable shoes, dress for the weather.
What to Expect: We will study the contouring features of a park and street and the drains, gutters, downspouts of several homes. The tour will be completely outdoors. Creating wildlife habitat, shade for hot west-facing walls or for pedestrians, keeping foundations dry are all part of the multiple benefits that come with careful planning and implementation.
